Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco

This album marks the new release by Italian pianist Adriano Murgia, issued on December 1st, 2025 by Piano Classics. It presents a refined selection of piano works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895–1968), a composer celebrated for his lyrical grace, craftsmanship, and stylistic versatility.

Though famed for his contributions to the guitar repertoire, Castelnuovo-Tedesco also created a captivating body of piano music. The pieces featured here, rich in atmosphere, imagery, and melodic charm, reflect his Italian roots, his training under Ildebrando Pizzetti, and the shimmering influence of French Impressionism, especially Debussy and Ravel. His pianistic voice blends neoclassical clarity with rhythmic vitality, folk inflections, and delicate harmonic color.

Forced to flee antisemitism before World War II, Castelnuovo-Tedesco later became a prolific film composer in Hollywood, contributing to more than 200 films. The works selected for this recording reveal the intimate, poetic side of his creativity and deserve renewed attention on today’s concert stages.

Adriano Murgia, who studied with renowned pianists such as Manuel Araujo, Artur Pizarro, and Roberto Prosseda—with whom he completed his Master’s degree at the Venezze Conservatory in Rovigo—brings these evocative scores to life with clarity, sensitivity, and expressive depth.
